ETRION 400 – study. The future of CPS.

The ETRION 400 is a design study on the future of CLAAS POWER SYSTEMS (CPS). It's not a tractor of the future, nor is it a prototype.

The ETRION is a design study being conducted on behalf of CLAAS. In 2008, young London-based designer Merlyn Gray, together with dedicated and ambitious young engineers in tractor development at CLAAS Tractors in Vélizy-Villacoublay, France, began exploring initial responses to a series of design issues, which it is hoped will deliver convincing and well-founded answers for future agricultural vehicles.

1. Optimal traction: TERRA TRAC concept taken further

How can traction in the field be maximised and the following three conditions fulfilled at the same time?

  • Minimal ground compaction (wheel/track combination in which the track positioned is in second traction path alongside the wheels in the field, thus avoiding "twins")
  • High manoeuvrability (with two steerable axles and crawler track raisable at the headlands)
  • Road compatibility (width under 3.30 metres, since additional traction ensured fully by extendable track crawler)

2. Maximum efficiency: drive system concept taken further

How can the efficacy and efficiency of the drive system be optimised in agricultural machinery, including in offshore situations? How can electric mobility be implemented in this regard? In this study, for instance, eight drive heads can be equipped with electric wheel hub assemblies; the vehicle can be fitted with a gas-operated assembly for power generation or can be operated via future-generation fuel-cell solutions, or via other solutions for electricity delivery.

3. Intuitive handling: assistance systems concept taken further

How can efficiency and comfort be increased in day-to-day operations? The study hints at location points for front- and rear-mounted implements with innovative plug-in technology. Further ideas relating to cab and cockpit designs and handling characteristics, although likewise alluded to in the conceptual drawings, are not viewable.

The ETRION is inspiration – an ambitious conceptual scene has been set for interesting ideas. A stimulus for taking ideas further – although with no binding reference to the future design language of CLAAS vehicles.

The ETRION 400 name: the blue E stands for electric mobility, T for TRAC, R for "Rad", the German word for wheel, ION is our characteristic ending, 400 designates the performance range at 400 hp (or will we remove the word "horsepower" from our vocabulary once and for all?).
