Energy wood production.

On a global scale, wood remains one of the most important energy sources. Densely forested countries in Europe include Latvia, Sweden and Finland. In Latvia, wood accounts for 35 percent of the country's total energy production, the highest proportion in Europe. In Germany, by contrast, the proportion of total energy production from by wood as an energy source is only around three percent.

Wood is primarily burned for heat production in heating systems and open fires in private homes. On a larger scale, wood is now also used in the industrial sector. Wood chips and pellets are used both for heat production and for electricity generation in power plants.

The following "energy wood" types are now used: low-grade, forest-sourced wood types, wood grown in short-rotation plantations, residual timber from the wood processing industry, and wood waste.

In short-rotation plantations, wood is produced using fast-growing trees with high coppicing capabilities. Here, the most important species are willows and poplars, with alders and robinias also being used to an extent.

Mechanised harvesting of short-rotation plantations can be managed using tree choppers, self-propelled forage harvesters or other machines.

The GMHT 140 manufactured by JENZ is a tractor-mounted machine designed to mill hardwoods up to a stem diameter of 10 cm, and softwoods up to 14 cm. Both double- and single-row short-rotation plantations can be harvested. The prime mover of the GMHT 140 must be able to develop at least 250 kW / 340 hp.

For the methodical and sustainable management of forests, it is extremely important that machine application is both economically efficient and gentle on the ground.
